Uganda by Bike

A slower, closer way to see the country between the classic game drives and treks.

Mountain biking is a genuinely under-used way to experience rural Uganda — tea and coffee estates around Fort Portal and Bwindi, quiet dirt roads through Rwenzori foothill villages, and forest-fringe trails that a vehicle simply cannot reach. It works best as an addition to a wider itinerary rather than a standalone trip: a half-day or full-day ride built in around your gorilla trekking or lodge days.

How We Build This In

Lodge-Based Rides

Several of our partner lodges, including Singita Kwitonda in Rwanda, keep mountain bikes on-site for guided rides through the surrounding countryside — a genuine, low-key option that needs no separate arrangement.

Tea Estate Routes

The rolling tea and coffee estates around Fort Portal and Kibale offer some of the most scenic, gently graded cycling terrain in the country — a natural half-day addition to a Kibale or crater-lakes stay.

Community Rides

Guided rides through villages near Bwindi and the Rwenzori foothills, run in partnership with local operators, put a portion of every booking directly into the community you’re cycling through.

This is a request we build into an itinerary rather than a fixed package — tell us your fitness level and how much time you want on two wheels, and we’ll design the route and days around it.

Do I need to bring my own bike?

No — lodges and local operators that offer cycling provide bikes and, in most cases, helmets. Let us know in advance if you have specific equipment requirements.

How fit do I need to be for a Uganda cycling excursion?

Routes range from gentle, flat estate roads to more demanding hill terrain. We match the route to your fitness level rather than assuming a single standard.
